Esperanza’s Offering to the National Conversation on Race:

Our Shared Future, Reckoning with our Racial Past

The Esperanza Peace and Justice Center will host five Pláticas, or panels, with local community members, academics and activists to share the continued impacts of historical racism and the response of ongoing activism, especially in predominantly Mexican American and lower-income Westside neighborhoods and within the larger context of the city of San Antonio and the state of Texas. 10:00 AM - Refusing to Forget - An overview of cultural genocide in San Antonio with Mónica Muñoz Martínez 
11:10 AM - The Two San Antonio’s Pt 1 with Mónica Cruz and Rogelio Sáenz with an overview of San Antonio’s socio-economic landscape past and present
12:10 PM - Lunch
 1:00 PM - The Two San Antonio’s Pt. 2 with Marisol Cortez and Rebecca Flores on the structures of power past and present through the “17 White Men” framework
 2:00 PM - Poetry performance by Carmen Tafolla
 3:00 PM - Reckoning with Ourselves with Verónica Méndez on how museums perpetuate racist narratives and imagining a new way forward with examples like the Museo del Westside
 3:50 PM - Organizing for Change community exchange where we discuss what has worked in the past and how to become more effective today.

5:00 PM – Closing Performance.

National Conversation on Race Series

The National Conversation on Race series comes to San Antonio where it will immerse attendees in thought-provoking conversations, critical convenings on historical interpretation, film screenings, educator workshops, and art explorations, all aiming to deepen participants’ understanding of how race is woven into every aspect of daily life.


The National Conversation on Race, San Antonio is hosted by, and in collaboration with the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, American Indians in Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions, Asian Texans for Justice, The DoSeum, San Antonio African American Community Archive Museum and the Witte Museum.
