Mark Waldrop was born in San Antonio and spent many summers with his aunt and uncle in Abilene Texas. His first instrument, as a toddler, was a plastic ukulele followed by an Airline acoustic guitar.
Shortly out of high school, he moved to New York City and performed with other great folk performers, such as, Odetta, Phil Ochs, Dylan and others. He was greatly influenced by British folk musicians like Donovan and Pentangle. Working as an usher at the Bill Graham’s East Village rock venue the Fillmore East exposed him to many of the great Rock acts of the day.
Mark gigged around the Village, took a hiatus to Phoenix and eventually returned to New York City where he started taking music lessons from the legendary Roy Smeck and Carl Thompson who was known for building extremely high end electric bass guitars. From there he spent a few years in the Bay Area in California, playing a restaurant gig and later joining a Bakersfield style country band out of Oakland.
Mark eventually found his way back to Texas and spent 13 years in Dallas playing a various venues before returning to San Antonio in 1990 where he concentrated on building and repairing guitars and became the proud owner of Guitar Tex, one of San Antonio’s finest guitar shops. Guitar Tex has been around for nearly 25 years. He still plays gigs with his trio Mark’s Brothers playing a wide array of vintage musical styles like swing, Western swing, rockabilly, old school country and pop tunes by Texas songwriters and even some originals.
