SUMMARY:"Is Fiesta Racist? It's Complicated" Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the exciting and thought provoking exhibition “Is Fiesta Racist? It’s Complicated!” featuring the work of artist Ali Friedrich and curated by Dr. Puente para la Gente. \nThe exhibition will be on view till June 27\, 2025 during gallery hours 11 am – 6 pm. \nWe look forward to celebrating art and community with you! \nDr. Puente’s interest in this subject was sparked when she learned about the highly controversial 2015 medal “Fiesta is Racist” that exploded on The Esperanza Peace and Justice Facebook page. In the ten years since issuing the 2015 “Fiesta is Racist” medal\, more attention has been paid to the historical grievances associated with Fiesta S.A. due to the work of artists\, writers\, and scholar-activists’ critical analysis of Fiesta S.A. And now\, in 2025\, the artist behind the controversial work\, Ali Friedrich\, has reproduced the medal in conjunction with an art show at Chingarté Gallery at Blue Star Arts Complex titled “It’s Complicated: Fiesta is Racist. A Performative Commentary of Fiesta S.A. Pop-up Shop\, Art Show\, and Fiesta Medal Sale” open select dates until May 2nd. \nThe 2025 edition of the medal is on sale at Esperanza. DESCRIPTION:A feminist community-engaged digital humanities project (CCC) focusing on narratives of local (physical and digital) activism in Texas and across borders through the different workshops. \nPapelitos Guardados Digital Collections: Designs and tools to shed light on Community Stories” \nSaturday\, May 10\, 2025 10 am – 1 pm. \nJoin Dr. Sylvia Fernández\, and students: Eliza Castro (MA student)\, Adriana Mata (PhD student)\, Imelda Mendoza (PhD student) for an engaging workshop and community showcase centered on personal\, familial and collective archives! In this session\, creators of powerful personal and community-based digital archives will share their inspiring work.
