DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate Diez y Seis with the women of MujerArtes! Join us for the opening of their Fiestas Patrias de Mujer Artes exhibit and art sale on Sept. 16 from 5 PM-8PM at the Casa de MujerArtes (1412 El Paso).\nThe artwork can be seen through Oct. 15\, Monday through Friday from 9:30 AM-5 PM. \nThe women draw on Mexican and Mexican-American culture and depict familiar themes and scenes in various clay artworks.\nThe women have also been creating tiles that will go into their new adobe studio that we are building at the Rinconcito de Esperanza (816 S. Colorado). \nAbout MujerArtes\nThe Cooperativa MujerArtes\, located on the Westside\, is a 21 year-old project sponsored by the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center. It has been teaching low income Latinas the art of working and creating with clay. A “lost” art in the United States of America\, clay work is very much tied to everyday life as well as the universal circle of life. SUMMARY:Mil Guitarras para Víctor Jara
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 17 at 2:00 p.m. join renowned San Antonio singer-songwriters Tish Hinojosa and Lourdes Pérez and others to sing the songs of the great Chilean songwriter Víctor Jara. Víctor’s songs of love\, friendship\, social justice\, and peace are still sung throughout the world over forty years after his assassination during the 1973 coup that overthrew the democratically-elected government of Dr. Salvador Allende. \nMil Guitarras para Víctor Jara is held annually in Santiago\, Chile. This year we will hold our own Mil Guitarras event right here in San Antonio to honor Víctor’s memory AND to encourage the U.S. government to extradite his assassin–who lives openly in south Florida–to face justice in Chile. \nThis is a participatory activity that anyone can attend on September 17. If you’d like to sing along in the official “choir” with Tish and Lourdes\, you may come to a couple of rehearsals before the event to practice the songs.
