DESCRIPTION:WARRIOR GIRL\nA Book Premiere in Poetry\, Dramatization & Song\n7pm to 9pm \nJoin us at the Esperanza for the book premiere of Carmen Tafolla’s 40th book\, Warrior Girl (Penguin\, 2023). It will be a fun evening of music\, poetry\, and cultural affirmation\, as Poet Laureate Carmen Tafolla and singer/songwriter Azul interweave excerpts from Warrior Girl with Azul’s performance of songs\, both traditional and original. \nWarrior Girl\, Tafolla’s first novel in verse\, is set in San Antonio’s Westside. It tells the story of Celina\, a 12-year-old girl who—through the power of celebration\, the strength of her values\, and the support of her grandmother and friends—survives discrimination\, economic difficulties\, her father’s deportation and a pandemic. In the process\, Celina reclaims her name\, her language and her heritage. \nAppropriate for middle grade readers age 10-14\, it has a broad appeal to young adults and adults. \nReception and book signing to follow the program\, with books for sale by The Twig Book Shop. \n\n\nParkingEvent Parking is available at San Antonio College Lot #28 on the corner of Evergreen St. and Maverick St. \nThe Esperanza entrance is on Evergreen St. \nThere is additional parking for persons with physical disabilities at the Planned Parenthood Parking Lot next to the Esperanza off of San Pedro Avenue.
