The Esperanza EnvironmentalJustice
Project was founded by Enrique Valdivia to further networking and collaboration
for environmental justice organizing in San Antonio. Since 1998, this project
has conducted health surveys, helped to organize communities to fight a
Browning Ferris Industries landfill, held informational summits about the local electrical company
and air pollution, and more. The Project documented some of it's efforts
in two "State of the Neighborhood Reports." The first report, One Hundred Years of Solid Waste
focuses on the struggle between corporate giant Browning Ferris Industries
and the communities in and around Martínez Texas. The second, Toxic
Wasteland is a short history of the environmental justice movement
in East San Antonio.
The Project's San Antonio
partners include the Eastside based Neighborhoods First Alliance (NFA),
the San Antonio Coalition For Environmental & Economic Justice (SACCEJ),
United Homeowners Improvement Association (UHIA) and the Martínez
Environmental Group. Austin partners include the Sustainable
Energy & Economic Development Coalition (SEED).
