At 1300 sq. ft. Ruben’s was a popular neighborhood gathering place. In the future, we plan to open a Museo de la Comunidad (Community Museum) where neighborhood residents and visitors can look through photo archives gathered for the En Aquellos Tiempo Westside Fotobanner Project. We also envision selling healthy snacks like aguas frescas and fruit cups for kids at the nearby schools; and incorporating a storefront and tiendita/shop where neighborhood residents can sell handmade artwork. Further modifications to Ruben’s will include installation of a “green” air conditioning system, new fixtures and sinks in existing bathrooms, new windows, doors and exterior finish, electrical improvements, and ADA modifications. A screened-in porch will connect Ruben’s Ice House to a large concrete slab used for dances and outdoor film screenings. The green space between the Casa de Cuentos and Ruben’s Ice House will contain raised-beds for gardening and an underground cistern for rainwater collection.
